On November 19, 2011, INEB and Tibet House together invite you to the final art exhibition and evening gala celebration of the International Buddhist Art Gathering 2011 at Tibet House in New York City.

Join us for an elegant evening of live music, dance performances, and a special exhibition of Buddhist artwork by esteemed artists from around the world, including Songdej Thipthong, Steven P. Perkins, and Lowell Boyers. Speaking at the gala are honored guests Sulak Sivaraksa, the co-founder of INEB, and American Buddhist Bernie Glassman, founder of Zen Peacemakers and Greyston Bakeries. Ajahn Sulak’s latest publication The Wisdom of Sustainability will be available for purchase and autograph from 8-9pm only.

Delicious Asian delicacies and beverages will be served all evening. All proceeds from the gala contribute to INEB peacebuilding and human rights programs.

INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF ENGAGED BUDDHISTS

Establishment
In 1989, the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) was established in Siam (Thailand) by Sulak Sivaraksa, other thinkers and social activists, Buddhists and non-Buddhists. INEB operated as an autonomous organization under the Bangkok-based Sathirakoses-Nagapradeepa Foundation. Over the years the network has expanded to include members, both individuals and organizations, from more than 20 countries across Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. From this diversity, an understanding of socially engaged Buddhism has emerged which integrates the practice of Buddhism with social action for a healthy, just and peaceful world.

Nature of the Organization
INEB is comprised of distinguished activists, spiritual leaders and academics, mainly Buddhists of all sects. This network addresses social issues and social services based on spirituality in collaboration with non-Buddhists at the international level. INEB’s member activities address a variety of issues to serve their own communities. The members also support one another through collaborating on common projects and joint strategic planning for advancing INEB’s vision and activities. The Secretariat’s office initiates the flow of information and support by offering programs to fortify members’ capacity through joint activities and shared resources.

Social Issues of Concern and Engagement
INEB’s philosophy and practice is based on compassion, harmony, non-violence and co-existence as revealed by The Buddha. The core mission is to confront and end suffering using analysis and actions guided by the Four Noble Truths. Activities focus on the following areas:

  • Peacebuilding and Reconciliation
  • Human rights and social justice
  • Gender & women’s’ empowerment
  • Alternative development
  • Alternative development
  • Environment & climate change
  • Reform and revival of Buddhist institutions
  • Youth and spiritual leadership development
  • Inter-religious/faith dialogue and collaboration

Vision and Objectives
INEB’s comprehensive vision is to develop the perspective and practice of socially engaged Buddhism that informs aglobal perspective by:

  • Promoting understanding, cooperation and networking among inter-Buddhist and inter-religious social action groups
  • Acting as an information center related to the areas of social concern
  • Facilitating conferences, education and training that supports and strengthens Buddhists and other socially active individuals and groups
